The Unified Numbering System discovered by SAE and ASTM is a
composition-based system of commercial alloys and metals. These materials are
provided with a letter each and this letter is followed by five numbers that
together develop an identification number for each alloy and metal.
The reactive and refractory metals and alloys include boron, hafnium,
molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, thorium, tungsten, vanadium, berylium, chromium,
cobalt, rhenium, titanium and zirconium.
The table below provides the unified numbering system for all the reactive
and refractory metals and alloys.
