International Syalons produces a variety of sialon and silicon nitride advanced ceramic grinding media, which are applied in industrial wear for the preparation of analytical samples and the milling or mixing of abrasive powders.

In comparison to other materials, such as alumina, zirconia, tungsten carbide and steel, the grinding media produced by International Syalons provide reduced contamination and improved milling efficiency.

Sialons are ceramic alloys of silicon nitride that possess the exceptional properties of their parent material. Sialons are extremely strong and hard, they are also thermally stable and are resistant to wear and corrosion.

Sialon milling media are available in two grades, Syalon 101 and Syalon 050. Syalon 101 is suitable for critical resistance applications, whereas Syalon 050 is the harder material and is suitable for extreme wear applications.

In analytical sample preparation trials, weight losses for Syalon 101 bowls and media were about 14% of the reported weight losses for agate, alumina, zirconia and tungsten carbide. Therefore, there was a high reduction of contamination of the sample, along with extension of the media life. Furthermore, Syalon 101 milling efficiency is generally improved, which means that the milling times are reduced.
