In early 2000, Timken implemented a plan to transform their company. This meant that all production facilities were to be made more profitable and competitive. They expect these changes to reduce costs by $120 million per year by then end of 2004.
As a consequence of this, many manufacturing plants have shifted among plants, whilst others have been closed or sold.
To this end, they have decided to close the Darlington, UK plant, a plant acquired when Timken purchased Torrington. This will affect the positions of 104 associates.
Production capacity from the Darlington plant will be moved to other plants that make the same products, but in larger quantities and at lower costs. Equipment will begin to be moved after July, during which time Timken will try and offer uninterrupted product supply.
