A manufacturer required ten different tapered ceramic components, which are the smallest parts used in the product. A previous supplier provided parts that were of inconsistent quality and the customer requested PremaTech to produce and deliver superior ceramic components that the specifications required.
The Solution
A team of engineers from PremaTech defined critical dimensions for success in the manufacturing process and designed a fixture to keep the metallized surface centered at the same time grinding the taper and met with the metallizing vendor to discuss important surface features. Those collaborative efforts encouraged the vendor to recommend a nickel chrome coating instead of nickel for achieving desired resistivity. PremaTech engineers also collectively worked to determine an optimal adhesive thickness down to 0.0005".
PremaTech delivered 20 ceramic parts for First Article Inspection after two months. The FAI shipment was approved and 700 parts were ordered.
In-process steps were codified by PremaTech offering the customer documented evidence of the company’s standard quality control procedures.
The Benefits
The benefits experienced by the customer include:
- Experiencing an assembly yield in the 80% range when compared to a 50% average with the previous supplier.
- This 60% gain helps the customer to improve profitability and on-time delivery
- PremaTech continues to work with the customer to achieve additional process improvements.
