The Three Important Factors to Consider for Fluid Analysis

Regularly scheduled analysis of heat transfer fluids is an essential step of an effective preventive maintenance program. As heat transfer fluids respond differently to adverse conditions compared to lubricating oils, different analytical data needs to be collected by users.

Most Critical Tests

Acid number, viscosity, and distillation range are the three most critical tests to track the fluid. Acid number reveals current oxidation level of the fluid, providing information about future fouling and sludge problems. Viscosity test helps to determine whether the fluid is too viscous or thick for efficient heat transfer. Distillation range determines the fluid composition for alteration due to overheating.

If testing confirms the degradation of the fluid, the potential reasons could be equipment and/or operational abnormalities. Rectifying such issues before they lead to any serious production shutdowns or product quality issues will increase efficiency and save money.
