Castrol Quenchants and the Castrol Index

At Castrol, we know how sophisticated the heat treatment industry is today and we have invested in the latest technology to ensure that our products are at the leading edge of mineral oil and polymer based quenchants.

To meet the increasing demands placed on the heat treatment industry, to harden ‘leaner’ steels, achieve higher core hardness, reduce distortion to a minimum and to maintain bright-as-quenched finishes, Castrol has developed a new generation of quenchants capable of meeting these demands.

Castrol’s policy of developing working partnerships with our customer has enabled us to have a better understanding of the customers’ requirements and to develop products that meet their needs.

Benefits from Castrol’s expertise and leading technology:

  • Castrol has a comprehensive product range
  • Castrol provides quality after-sales service
  • Castrol provides a consultancy service
  • Castrol invests in the latest testing equipment
  • Use of the Castrol Index

The Castrol Index

The Castrol Index was the result of co-operation between Castrol France and Renault France to develop as a method of evaluating a mineral oil based quenchant without the need for Severity of Quench test equipment.

The Castrol Index uses data from a standard ISO 9950 cooling curve to evaluate the quenchant.

The Castrol Index calculation is based on the following data:

K’ = Equipment constant

VMAX = Maximum cooling rate

TMAX = Temperature corresponding to the maximum cooling rate

There is excellent correlation between obtained as-quenched hardness and the Castrol Index.

Worked Example

The Castrol Index is an internationally accepted method for evaluating a mineral oil quenchant.

Take the situation where VMAX = 106°C/s, TMAX = 618°C, TBATH = 80°C and K’ = 103.86, then:

The following data was gathered using an IVF Quenchotest apparatus and Iloquench 395 as the quenchant.

Test data for Iloquench 395 where VMAX = 106°C/s, TMAX = 618°C, TBATH = 80°C and K’ = 103.86
