Background

Nyrim is a nylon block copolymer consisting of polyamide 6 (nylon 6) toughened through the addition of an elastomer. Nyrim 1000 consists of 90% nylon with 10% elastomer.

Nyrim products are formed using reaction injection moulding (RIM).

The “conditioned” state refers to, mechanical properties for a thin finished product, measured at 23°C and 50% relative humidity.

Advantages

Nyrim has excellent fatigue and impact resistance, even at sub-zero temperatures. Overall higher stiffness than RIM PUR formulations for similar applications. Better overall chemical resistance to solvents.

RIM processing of this material offers economical option for large / thick parts in small to medium series. Nyrim also offers a high design freedom.

Disadvantages

Water uptake causes changes in material properties. Cannot be moulded on PUR RIM machines. Small number of moulders available.

Typical reasons for choosing Nyrim include:

        High stiffness/toughness balance

        Exceptional repetitive load endurance (fatigue resistance)

        Excellent impact resistance (also at low temperatures)

        Excellent abrasion resistance

        Superior mechanical properties at low temperatures (-40°C)

Other reasons include:

        Consistency of mechanical properties over a broad temperature range above an below ambient temperature. Nyrim can be used from –50°C to 140°C, and intermittently used at 180°C.

        Nyrim is chemically resistant to many chemicals except concentrated oxidising acids or concentrated alkaline solutions.

        Nyrim can be coloured in mass or painted with standard industrial paints

        Vulcanisation of rubber directly on Nyrim is possible

        Nyrim is recyclable.

Larger or thick plastic parts that require impact resistance at low temperatures (alpine). Parts made in small to medium series. Rotationally moulded tanks. Specialty parts used in demanding areas like heavy industrial equipment, mining and oil and gas markets.
