Discover how PBS eXpress is transforming engine vibration analysis with advanced features designed for efficiency and precision in turbine maintenance.
What inspired the development of the PBS eXpress system, and how does it differ from previous MTI Instruments products?
The PBS eXpress system was heavily influenced by the success of our flagship product, the PBS-4100, which has been around for over 30 years. The PBS-4100 is reliable for engine vibration analysis and balancing but is mostly employed in large-scale applications.
We realized the need to provide the same powerful technology in a smaller, more accessible package designed exclusively for MROs and operators of smaller corporate planes.
We created the PBS eXpress with the same family DNA, but this version is more tailored to the needs of business aviation. It is portable, affordable, and designed for quick vibration assessments and engine balancing—all without sacrificing the power and features found in our high-end systems.
Can you explain the key benefits of the PBS eXpress for MROs and smaller jet operators?
One of the primary advantages is the PBS eXpress's speed and simplicity. MROs and small jet operators frequently lack the luxury of devoting significant time and resources to thorough diagnostic procedures.
The PBS eXpress enables users to measure vibration levels swiftly, conduct spectral analysis, and balance engine trim in minutes.
Its pre-configured engine parameter sets and clear interface allow technicians to be up and running with little training. The device is also reasonably priced for smaller companies and provides many of the functions found in more expensive, portable balancing equipment.
How does the PBS eXpress ensure accuracy and reliability in vibration analysis and engine balancing?
Our decades of vibration analysis experience have contributed to the PBS eXpress's precision. The device offers overall and monitored N1 and N2 vibration data, which are crucial for determining engine health. It can also monitor accessories on the accessory gearbox, allowing you to examine more than just the engine core.
The PBS eXpress also supports up to four vibration and tachometer inputs, allowing it to track multiple parts simultaneously. In addition, the system's balance wizard includes a step-by-step tutorial for placing balance weights, ensuring accuracy even for inexperienced users.
Whether you are working with a well-known engine platform or something new, the system is built to provide dependable results every time.

What feedback have you received from early adopters of the PBS eXpress, and how has it influenced further development?
The reaction has been very positive, particularly about the simplicity of use and flexibility it provides. Early adopters praised the system's ease of use, allowing them to get up and running quickly, which is essential in the fast-paced world of MROs.
One of the most common comments we have received is that people prefer the pre-configured engine setups. This has undoubtedly influenced our current development as we expand supported engine platforms based on client demand.
Another source of feedback has been the balance wizard, which has been a game-changer for new players. We constantly listen to client feedback to ensure the system evolves to meet their requirements.
Can you discuss the importance of portability and ease of use in modern vibration analysis tools like the PBS eXpress?
Portability and ease of use are critical, particularly in today's aviation maintenance environment. Technicians require a tool to take directly to the aircraft on the ramp or in a hangar.
The PBS eXpress is battery-powered, with a runtime of up to five hours, making it highly versatile in the field. It can also operate while charging, ensuring no downtime.
The interface is intended to be intuitive, even for technicians with limited experience with vibration analysis. With a few clicks, they can conduct a vibration survey or balance an engine, which is critical when time is of the essence.
How does the PBS eXpress integrate with existing systems in a repair shop or maintenance facility?
Integration was an important consideration during development. Many repair shops already have cable sets and other equipment, so we ensured that the PBS eXpress works with them.
If you are upgrading from an older vibration analyzer, the system is intended to work with many of the same cable sets. This means you do not need to overhaul your equipment completely. In terms of data, the PBS eXpress allows users to export results in text and CSV formats, as well as full-color PDF reports for balancing purposes.
This makes it simple to incorporate the findings into existing maintenance logs or share them with engine manufacturers and regulatory bodies.
What are the most common challenges users face when implementing the PBS eXpress, and how does MTI Instruments address these challenges?
One challenge we have encountered is that some users may be unfamiliar with engine balancing, particularly in smaller operations. To address this, we have included a comprehensive balance wizard that guides technicians through the process.
Even if they have never balanced an engine before, the system makes it easy step by step. Another potential issue is calibration. With the PBS eXpress, we have made it as simple as possible by including an integrated calibration wizard that works in tandem with our 1510A Portable Signal Generator.
Whether you are learning the ropes of balancing or keeping the system in calibration, we have created tools to make sure everything runs smoothly. Of course, our team provides on-site training to ensure technicians feel comfortable using the system.
