The NanoSteel Company is an advanced materials company which has created a unique and proprietary portfolio of nanotechnology based and environmentally friendly steel alloys that greatly increase the value of steel in most of today’s industrial applications.
Product success has been through the development of Super Hard Steel® (SHS) alloys which feature nanoscale microstructures. SHS alloys are for use as metallic coatings within power generation, mining, cement, concrete and oil & gas industries.
Applied by thermal spray and weld overlay processes, NanoSteel SHS alloys dramatically increase the service life of industrial components subject to wear and corrosion environments, eliminating the need for costly alternatives and environmentally dangerous chrome plating.
Erosion and Corrosion on Boiler Tubes
Waste coal is a low-energy-value discard that has accumulated for more than a century at anthracite and bituminous coal mines in the Northeast USA. Since the early 1990s, coal fired power plants near these mines have been configured to burn this cheap fuel source in circulating fluidized bed combustor (CFBC) boilers.
Nanosteel Coating for Boiler Tubes
Inside a CFBC boiler at a coal fired power plant in Pennsylvania, a NanoSteel® coating solution was applied to boiler tubes located above a ceramic refractory wall where the most erosion damage occurs. The NanoSteel coating solution was applied to a 7’ x 5’ section of boiler tubes between two LMC Armacor™ coatings.
Boiler tubes extend 30 feet above two-story ceramic refractory walls.
LMC Armacor™ coating shows damage from erosion.
NanoSteel coating shows no damage from corrosion.
NanoSteel Coating Outperforms LMC Armacor™ Coatings
When the boiler tubes were inspected during a scheduled outage after 9 months of service, the NanoSteel coating solution did not show any signs of erosion or corrosion damage while the LMC Armacor™ coatings showed erosion damage requiring repair.
