Introduction

Steels containing only carbon as their main alloying element as known as carbon steels. These steels can contain traces of 0.4% silicon and 1.2% manganese. Carbon steels also contain small quantities of copper, nickel, molybdenum, aluminium and chromium. Impurities such as sulphur and phosphorous are also found in carbon steels.
