Spectro’s portable MiniVisc 3000 can achieve on-site direct kinematic viscosity measurements.
The MiniVisc 3000 series (formerly the SpectroVisc Q3000 Series) are the first portable, solvent-free, temperature-controlled kinematic viscometers. They offer high-precision measurements, enabling the straightforward identification of viscosity changes due to contamination, mixing, and oil degradation. In situations where prompt results are crucial for assessing the condition of vital equipment, the devices were made to measure kinematic viscosity at 40 °C in the field.
Principle of Operation

The patented split cell design of the MiniVisc 3000 viscometers allows for the measurement of kinematic viscosity with just a few drops (60 µL) of oil. When the split cell is closed, the central portions create a funnel with a 100 µ gap that lets oil fall naturally. As oil flows, sensors along the funnel are activated, and the distance between the two sensors is recorded.
Next, the kinematic viscosity is calculated. After being opened, the split cell is easily cleaned with a non-abrasive cleaning pad, making it ready for the next sample. The measurement is conducted with the split cell maintained at 40 °C.

The test duration ranges from a few seconds to several minutes and is proportionate to viscosity. The viscosity result is independent of the oil's color or cleanliness.

Features |
Benefits |
Direct kinematic viscosity measurement |
A measure of a liquid’s flow under the influence of gravity is provided at a constant temperature so viscosity can be compared and trended with prior readings. Requires no density check, temperature measurement, instrument pre-configuration or calculation. |
Split-cell capillary channel |
Using a very small sample size; the sampling chamber controls temperature while infrared sensors measure flow and trajectory, delivering immediate results. |
Self-contained with high-resolution touch screen, battery and microprocessor |
Enables easy operation, in sunlight or low light, drawing minimal power for a 6-hour battery life. Requires no PC. |
Small sample size |
A small sample size of 60 µl (about four drops) is easy to obtain without impacting the lubricant level, reducing waste. |
Temperature controlled:
40 °C ± 0.1 °C |
Each sample is held to a constant temperature for consistently accurate readings without additional pre-test measurements |
Works with transparent and opaque oils |
Provides accurate results for even the dirtiest samples. |
No cleaning solvent
necessary |
Eliminates worry about solvent disposal in remote locations. Fewer items to carry. |
Weighs less than
1.8 kg (4 lbs.) |
Designed for remote locations, the SpectroVisc Q3000 series includes a hinged cover that protects the sample chamber and touch screen while being carried by hand, in a toolbox or a knapsack. |
Battery operated |
Stays charged for more than six hours. Built-in universal charger for use worldwide; region-specific power cable included. |

Combination Kits
Other portable oil analysis instruments work well with the MiniVisc units. They do not need a solvent to clean and are all battery-operated.
Viscometer/FerroCheck Combination Kit
The easiest way to ensure that machine wear is within alarm limits and that oil quality is acceptable is to perform a quick field check using viscosity and ferrous particle concentration. With FerroCheck 2000, users can easily check the concentration of ferrous particles up to 1%. It is an additional tool for the MiniVisc 3000, and when used in tandem, it covers most field service professionals' needs for oil analysis.
Fluidscan/Viscometer Combination Kit

The combination of Fluidscan and Viscometer allows professionals in field service and lubricant service to access comprehensive oil condition information. The portable Fluidscan InfraRed Oil Analyzer tests the chemistry of oil, including oxidation, nitration, sulfation, total acid number, total base number, and water, using InfraRed spectroscopy. The combination is widely used in mining sites, power plants, and marine vessels.
