The Volscan Profiler available from Stable Micro Systems is a benchtop laser-based scanner that quantifies the density, volume, and dimensional profiles of solid products. When compared to contact and displacement methods that measure only volume, this non-contact measurement system provides substantial benefits.
Automatic calculation of various comprehensive dimension-related parameters is enabled by the fast three-dimensional (3D) digitization of products. The calculation results can be mathematically worked on for instant use or future retrieval in a range of data formats.
The Volscan Profiler is a fast and accurate technique for measuring the density, volume, and dimensional profiles of solid products to:
- Control and track variations in density, volume, and dimensions during manufacture
- Establish the dimensional properties of users’ “gold standard” product for future reliable quality control
- Establish the effects of formulation, ingredients, or processing variables on dimensions of end products
- Perform comparison with competitive products
- Validate product claims
- Evaluate dimensional changes during transportation or storage
- Offer an objective measurable result that can be stored and retrieved for future use in case users ever need to check back and compare with historical data
How the Instrument Works
The product is speared at each end or positioned by an appropriate mounting device customized to the particular product. Sample ID name and date are the parameters entered by the operator into the software for each batch under test. Then, the product is automatically weighed and vertically scanned by an eye-safe laser device to measure the contours of the product at selectable intervals while it rotates.
Each interval comprises 400 data points that offer a detailed profile of the product. This evaluation can be done quickly, and the results can be acquired within a period spanning from a few seconds to a few minutes based on the selected interval (0.05–50 mm) and the desired precision.
A Summary of Reasons Why Customers Will Benefit from Using the Volscan Profiler
-
Leave Old Operator-Dependent Displacement Techniques Behind
The Volscan Profiler allows fast 3D digitization of products that can be stored and then mathematically treated to produce comprehensive dimensional information for instant use or future retrieval. When users can automatically calculate various associated parameters, like surface area, specific volume, density, length, width, height, weight, and many more, why to restrict with just volume measurement?
-
Check and Verify the Volscan Profiler
A measurement is valuable only if it is accurate. This is why users will want to have control of instrument calibration and the means to confirm that the instrument performs accurate measurement by testing a “Known Volume Verification” ball.
-
Fully Rotatable Test Files
The scan detail can be appreciated in every plane. Users can view the scanned data in 2D and 3D orientations, and are thereby able to compare with previously-stored measurements. In the 2D sectional view, more manual measurements can be performed on selected intervals. It is feasible to rotate 3D views of the product in all planes, thus offering the flexibility of viewing for visual comparison and presentation.
Data is offered in the form of an integral spreadsheet for statistical manipulation and data collection purposes. Because the Volscan Profiler software has its own built-in spreadsheet, data need not be exported to another spreadsheet program. However, there is an Exporting to Excel option if desired.
Data can be dropped and automatically placed with test data fields or altered using a complete set of Report Editing tools by using an integral report template. On the other hand, data and images can be copied and pasted into other applications.
