Background
Yoel Sasson is a Lester Aronberg Professor of Applied Chemistry in the Casali Institute of Applied Chemistry, Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Born in 1946, Sasson has completed all his academic education in the Hebrew University. He was awarded both his M.Sc. (1970) and Ph.D. degrees with distinction (Summa Cum Laude) under the supervision of Prof. J. Blum, working on transition metal catalysts.
After assuming two postdoctoral positions in Canada and the US, he returned to the Hebrew University as a lecturer (1976) in Applied Chemistry. He became associate professor in 1983, professor (1988), and in 1991 was appointed to the Lester Aronberg Chair in Applied Chemistry.
Prof. Sasson served on several academic duties, including as director of the Casali Institute of Applied Chemistry (1987-1993). He assumed various directing and consulting positions in the chemical industry, and spent 11 years as Vice President of R&D at Makhteshim Chemical Works (1994-2005).
His current research interest is Process and Environmental Catalysis. The goal is to employ the vast expertise gained over the years in multiphase and phase-transfer catalysis in the crucial field of Green Chemistry. A wide variety of topics is adressed, from removal of contaminants in exhaust gases, to increasing the efficiency of jet fuels. Along with improving existing technologies in the spirit of Cleantech, the fuels of tomorrow are brought to life in the Sasson laboratory: efficient carriers for hydrogen, clean gases for microturbine operation, and more.
