Restrictions Placed on Use of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Rubber Production

The European Commission has adopted a proposal which will restrict the use and marketing of certain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH’s) in extender oils by the end of 2008. These extender oils are used in the production of tyres.

Extender oils are added during the processing of rubber materials to improve their processability, as well as influencing the final properties of the rubber.

The restriction have been brought into place as research has shown that some PAH’s are carcinogenic to humans.

The restrictions have been agreed to despite reservations from the European Association of the Rubber Industry.
