In response to a possible ban on glass bottles in the UK, Interbew will make its popular beer, Stella Artois, available in a plastic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.
Due to the popularity of the beer, the brewers felt that it was important to make sure that it was as available as possible. Consequently, they will make Stella Artois available in the plastic bottles for venues and events where glass packaging is banned such as outdoor festivals and sporting events.
The actual PET bottle to be used, will be used in place of the 330mL glass bottle. However, the plastic alternative has the same look, feel and size and the glass analogue, and will also be available a 24 bottle carton from March 1.
While selling beer in plastic bottles is not the ideal scenario, Mike Lees, managing director of Tennent Caledonian Breweries commented that, “Our research shows that glass wins over plastic every time. However, if the choice is between a plastic pint pot or a plastic bottle, customers overwhelmingly prefer the latter option.”
