Lyondell and Bayer MaterialScience Inaugurate New Propylene Oxide/Styrene Plant

The Lyondell Chemicals and Bayer MaterialScience 50/50 joint venture have inaugurated their new propylene oxide plant located near Rotterdam.

The world class plant is one of the largest of its kind in the world and uses Lyondell’s proprietary production technology which is the most economical available.

The plant has an annual capacity of 285,000 metric tons or propylene oxide as well as 635,000 metric tons of styrene.

Propylene oxide is used for the manufacture of polyurethane raw materials. Polyurethanes have a range of applications, many of which we come into contact with on a daily basis.

Styrene monomers also have a range of applications. They are used to make products ranging from disposable food packaging to high end engineering plastics.
