An ExxonMobil Chemical Exxtral™ performance polyolefin has been specified for the front and rear bumper fasciae of the new globally available VW Golf VI. Exxtral BMU130 polyolefin was developed specifically to meet the performance targets set by Volkswagen (VW). VW is the first German original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to select strong, light-weight Exxtral polyolefins for fasciae.
“The specification criteria set by VW are some of the most challenging in the industry. Using our technology and application expertise to develop a specific grade for these bumper fasciae ensured we could meet VW’s functional and cost needs, which was crucial in earning their business," said Marty E. Levine, global automotive marketing manager, ExxonMobil Chemical specialty compounds business.
The new TPO is characterized by a unique impact strength at low temperatures that provides the essential balance between stiffness and toughness required for bumper applications.
Exxtral BMU130 performance polyolefin is designed for tight tolerances and excellent dimensional stability. Its low coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE) allows parts to be designed with narrow gap dimensions for an aesthetic and stylish appearance.
This grade also meets part shrinkage requirements specified by VW and provides good surface appearance due to its fluidity. The product has a broad operating window, which helps to eliminate processing problems, such as “tiger stripes.” A ready-to-inject, fully-stabilized, colored compound, Exxtral BMU130 polyolefin can improve productivity and deliver cost savings as it requires no mixing or blending at the molding presses. Available in black or grey, it also offers good paintability and has high UV resistance.
The portfolio of Exxtral performance polyolefins is becoming increasingly popular with automotive designers and processors looking for new materials that offer opportunities to reduce weight and cost without sacrificing performance. Durable in adverse conditions, they provide outstanding surface hardness, good “fit and finish” characteristics, fast cycle times and are competitively priced.
