Leading Thermal Spray Researcher to Meet in Las Vegas

From America to Scandinavia to the Far East, the world’s leading thermal spray researchers, suppliers and applicators are coming to Las Vegas.

The International Thermal Spray Conference & Exposition (ITSC) will be held May 4-7 at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel. ITSC is organized by ASM Thermal Spray Society (TSS), the German Welding Society (DVS) and the International Institute of Welding (IIW). The ITSC 2009 theme, “Expanding Thermal Spray Performance to New Markets and Applications,” reaches beyond the core of the thermal spray community – the researchers, applicators and suppliers already using the technology – with presentations focused on bringing the advantages of thermal spray technology to new applications.

“Experts from the major thermal spray markets in America, Europe, and Asia will set the tone for the entire ITSC event,” said general co-chair Mitch Dorfman, Sulzer Metco (US).

Plenary speakers include Mr. Sylvian St-Onge, “Mr. HVOF,” who will discuss high velocity flame spraying requirements for landing gear applications, and Mr. Akira Nakahira, who will describe thermal spray coating applications and the state of job shops in Japan.

Invited market-oriented presenters include Prof. Xiaoou Huang on Trends in Thermal Spray Applications in China; Prof. Changhee Lee on Market Direction and Application Opportunities in Korea, G. Sundararajan on New Markets and Applications in India, and Dr. P. Nylen on Industrial and Research Activities in Europe.

In addition to advances in aerospace and power generation, ITSC presenters will cover new applications for microelectronics and semiconductors, in addition to biomedical applications. “Our technical focus has expanded beyond the traditional to bring new participants to our event,” Dorfman said.

To serve its global audience, the host city for ITSC rotates from North America to the Pacific Rim to Europe. “We look forward to a tremendous event in Las Vegas,” said general co-chair Peter Heinrich of Linde AG.

An important part of the ITSC experience is the ITSC Exposition, the largest annual gathering of companies that provide equipment, materials, products and services to the thermal spray community. For those new to thermal spray, pre-ITSC short courses provide an in-depth educational experience. The thermal spray coating process provides a functional surface to protect or improve the performance of an affordable substrate or component. Thermal spraying is used in many industries, including aerospace and power generation, to provide cost-effective protection against corrosion, wear and abrasion, as well as to restore and repair components.
