Inovative Smart Fiber Provides Firefighters with Additional Protection

DuPont Personal Protection introduced Nomex On Demand -- an innovative smart fiber that gives firefighters additional protection in temperatures of 250 degrees Fahrenheit and above -- at the recent International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) conference in Washington, D.C.

The term “smart fiber" refers to the new material's ability to detect the high temperature and automatically expand, trapping more air for greater thermal insulation.

Mark Vergnano, group vice president, DuPont Safety & Protection, spoke to about 250 firefighters attending the event and reinforced DuPont’s role as science partner to the firefighter and emergency response community.

"We believe, modestly, that this is one of the most important turnout-gear innovations in decades. It was born to focus on protecting lives -- your lives, in particular," Mark said.

More than 800 firefighters, decision makers and U.S. Congressional members attended the conference.
