Collaboration between ASM International, Granta Design, NASA Glenn Reaserch Center and other materials related and other organisations (numbering 10) in the US aerospace industry and government have formed the Material Data Management Consortium (MDMC). The MDMC was formed to develop software and database systems for managing materials data.
By developing purpose designed software and database solutions, the consortium hope to be able to improve return on investment for the materials research and development field. This will be done by increasing the quality and traceability of information and improving data management.
The project will take 3 years and will be managed by the ASM International. The steering committee will be chaired by Dr. Steve Arnold from NASA. All member organisations will be represented on the steering committee.
The software package that will be developed will be able to process raw data from testing machines and disseminate it. It will also be able to perform different sorts of analysis such as key performance parameter derivation, statistical analysis as well as other database type functions.
Member organisations are paying $25,000 per year to be part of the exercise. Granta are matching contributions dollar for dollar and will provide members with software updates throughout the course of the project.
