PPG's Fiber Glass Goving Products Approved for Use in Wind Turbine Blades

PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) has announced the certification of HYBON fiber glass roving products for wind turbine blades by Germanischer Lloyd (GL), a leading international certification body in the wind energy industry.

The certification includes HYBON 2001, 2002, 2006 and high-performance 2026 fiber glass rovings. It applies to products manufactured at all five PPG fiber glass locations - three in the United States; one in Wigan, England, U.K.; and one in Zibo, Shandong Province, China, that is a joint venture of PPG and Sinoma Jinjing Fiber Glass Co. Ltd.

PPG is a pioneer in both the engineering and manufacturing of fiber glass, which it has done for more than 60 years. The company has been a leading contributor to the global wind market for more than 20 years, during which HYBON fiber glass products have established their performance value in wind blade composite applications. According to Cheryl Richards, PPG global market manager, wind energy, HYBON fiber glass rovings offer blade producers the ability to engineer higher-performing products using a variety of resins, including vinyl ester.

"The certification verifies that HYBON fiber glass products exceed the requirements put forth by GL," Richards said. "PPG will continue to support and surpass the demanding requirements of this growing and emerging industry for customers and applications worldwide."

With a rich portfolio of globally available products, PPG Industries provides leadership in the renewable energy market. In addition to offering fiber glass for turbine blades and coatings for wind towers and blades, PPG also supplies glass and coatings for the solar energy market.
