GKN Win $600 Million Contract to Supply Airbus Parts

GKN Aerospace, the aerospace division of GKN has been awarded the contract to design and supply composite wing trailing edge panels for the Airbus A380 Superjumbo.

The contract is worth an estimated $600 million based on a projected production of 600 aircraft. This contract takes the total value of work for the A380 jumbo to in excess of $800 million, with other contracts existing for the wing midbox structure and flap track beams.

GKN will use in-house developed Resin Film Infusion Technology (RFI) to manufacture the A380 parts. This is an alternative to more conventional pre-preg processing, and has weight and cost saving advantages over existing technologies. The A380 will form a showcase for the new technology, for which this will be the first aerospace application.

The project will create an estimated 100 jobs for GKN’s Alabama facility.
