Johns Manville Launches Polyurethane Spray Foam Insulation

Johns Manville (JM), a Berkshire Hathaway company and global building products manufacturer, today introduced JM ocSPF insulation, a low-density polyurethane open-cell spray foam insulation designed for commercial and residential applications.

Recommended for walls, floors, unvented and vented attics and ceilings, JM ocSPF insulation will insulate cavities of any shape, creating a “seamless” protective air barrier that minimizes or eliminates air leakage for maximum building envelope performance.

JM ocSPF insulation is mold and mildew resistant, minimizes sound transmission and provides an R-value of 3.8 at one inch, R-13 at 3.5 inches and R-19 at 5.5 inches. It is considered an air impermeable insulation at a thickness of 3.5 inches. JM ocSPF insulation can be applied at up to 6 inches per pass and, when properly installed, the product expands 120 times its initial volume, sealing all voids, gaps and crevices. Unlike many other open-cell products on the market, JM ocSPF insulation is formulated with 100 percent reactive catalysts to minimize emissions during spraying, resulting in lower jobsite odor and improved safety for installers.

In addition, JM is introducing JM IB Coating, an intumescent ignition barrier coating recommended for use over JM ocSPF insulation in unvented attic and crawl space applications. JM IB Coating is an effective ignition barrier over JM ocSPF insulation at a minimum application rate of 0.6 gallons per 100 square feet.

“We’re excited to announce the expansion of our spray foam product line with the launch of JM ocSPF insulation,” said Mike Lawrence, vice president and general manager for JM’s Insulation Systems business. “We’re introducing JM ocSPF insulation with our customers in mind. Now, JM customers can order both fiber glass insulation and closed- and open-cell foam efficiently from one manufacturer, and with the reassurance that they are receiving quality products from Johns Manville.”

Available immediately, customers are now able to order mixed trucks of JM ocSPF insulation and JM Formaldehyde-free™ fiber glass insulation.

“What’s more, similar to our premium closed-cell product, JM Corbond III spray foam insulation, JM ocSPF insulation can be installed together with any of JM’s fiber glass building insulation products to create systems that meet the demands of any project,” said Lawrence.

Last summer JM introduced JM Corbond III™ insulation, a premium high-yield closed-cell spray foam insulation product. Also a polyurethane foam, JM Corbond III insulation can be used alone or in hybrid systems to create customized insulation systems for residential, commercial and industrial applications. JM Corbond III insulation offers the highest yield of any closed-cell foam building insulation, providing 5,000 to 5,200 board feet of coverage per set.

JM ocSPF insulation maintains its insulating performance over time. When properly installed, it adheres to a variety of substrates and fills gaps and cracks that lead to air and heat transfer.

JM ocSPF insulation and JM IB Coating will be initially distributed from the company’s Winder, Ga., and McPherson, Kan., manufacturing plants. JM ocSPF insulation is recommended for Climate Zones 1, 2 and 3 and some portions of Climate Zone 4, which includes the southern portion of the U.S. and the Pacific Coast.
