R.F. Mote Utilizes MISON Shielding Gas to Weld Heavy Structural Steel

In Canada’s highly competitive metal fabrication industry, manufacturers are constantly looking for technology that will give them that edge.

More and more of these fabricators are relying on MISON® shielding gases from Linde Canada to provide them the kind of welding speed and quality of weld that helps them meet their customer’s needs and stay ahead of the competition.

One company that switched to MISON gas is R.F. Mote Ltd., a Richmond Hill, Ontario, manufacturer of relay racks, cabinets, wall mount cabinets, networking and co-location cabinets. The company’s owner, Les Mote, needed to prepare some prototypes for a customer with polished aluminum checker plate. He turned to Linde Canada for technical assistance.

“Mr. Mote was trying to determine if he could use the MIG (metal inert gas) process or if the TIG (tungsteen inert gas) process would be better - the major concern was the cosmetic appearance of the finished product,” said John Christie, sales rep for Linde Canada. “We set up a demonstration using MISON Ar in the TIG process, which not only reduced the ozone generated during the welding process but it also provided a superior arc start and more stable arc that enhanced the weld appearance at faster welding speeds than would have been possible using the argon.”

Linde offers a full range of MISON shielding gases that are designed to improve the quality and productivity of almost any welding application. The addition of a small portion of nitric oxide in a MISON shielding gas is enough to effectively reduce the amount of ozone formed, while allowing other properties of the gas to enhance the arc and appearance of welds, all without affecting the mechanical properties or corrosion resistance of the weld.

“We have found that the Linde MISON gas for our aluminum TIG welding project has performed very well for us,” Mr. Mote said. “We are now able to put down nicer welds and at the same time increase weld speed.”

R.F. Mote Ltd. is now also welding heavy structural steel, a new process for the company, thanks to MISON 8C shielding gas. “Our experience was primarily in light-gauge welding,” Mr. Mote said. “Linde’s technical know-how, product recommendations and demonstrations enabled us to easily take on this new work and deliver the same quality product we are known for in light-gauge fabrication. It has also given us the confidence to take on more of this type of work.

“Most importantly, we are very pleased that these new gases offer more environmentally friendly work experience for our people,” Mr. Mote concluded.
