Taigang Group International Trade Co. Ltd. (Taigang Group) awarded Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH a contract for the modernization of a hot-strip mill at Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co. Ltd., located in Taiyuan, China.

The project comprises the supply of engineering, equipment, electrics and automation in addition to various services to increase mill performance, product quality and the product range. The contract value for Siemens VAI is a low two-digit million euro figure. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2011.

Siemens to modernize the 7-stand finishing mill at Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co. Ltd., Taiyuan, China.

Taigang Group is the largest Chinese producer of stainless steel and one of the most important producers of long and flat products in China. Two hot-strip mills are operated by Taigang Group in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. The hot-strip mill to be modernized was originally purchased as a second-hand facility from Japan and was subsequently relocated to Taiyuan in 1994. In 2002, the mill was initially modernized by Siemens VAI and Siemens AG to enable a production output exceeding 3,000,000 t/a.

In order to further improve mill performance and product quality as well as to extend the product mix, Taigang Group commissioned Siemens VAI to revamp this rolling facility once again. The 7-stand finishing mill will be equipped with new main drives, a new work-roll lubrication system and the existing work-roll cooling system will be enhanced with the installation of dynamic work-roll cooling headers. The laminar-cooling line will be outfitted with turbo-cooling headers featuring dynamic flow control to provide accelerated cooling. A new coiler will replace the existing No. 3 coiler and the coil-transport system will be modified. Furthermore, the Simatic-PCS-7 automation system previously supplied by Siemens will be updated. Supervisory services for erection, start-up and commissioning as well as training of customer personnel round off the Siemens VAI supply scope.

The extended product mix will be comprised of carbon, HSLA (high-strength low-alloy), stainless and pipe steel grades with strip thicknesses ranging from 1.5 mm to 12.7 mm at widths between 900 mm and 1,400 mm.
