Dynasol Elastomers Unveils New Copolymer for Hot Melt Adhesive Applications

Solprene® 1217, a styrene-butadiene copolymer (SSBR grade), is the latest product launched by leading SBC and SSBR supplier Dynasol Elastomers.

With superior thermal stability and high resistance to stronger process conditions, Solprene® 1217 has wide-reaching applications in hot melt adhesive formulations. Additionally, because it's compatible with a broad range of tackifier resins, Solprene® 1217 is an excellent SIS substitution for many specialty adhesives formulations.

"Some of our customers needed a polymer that could be processed at higher temperatures. At the same time, they wanted a product that could reduce polymer incorporation time and avoid gel generation during processing," says Dr. Walter Ramirez, director of technology at Dynasol.

Solprene® 1217 was the solution proposed by Dynasol to the market for superior thermal stability -- even during extreme processing conditions -- without high gel generation. S-1217 helps hot melt manufacturers increase productivity and reduce operating cost.

"It's really a breakthrough," says Dr. Ramirez. "Solprene® 1217 is more cost effective than SIS copolymers. Additionally, the Solprene® 1217 copolymer has improved shear and viscosity reduction over many other products on the market."

Solprene 1217 Benefits

The unique formulation of Solprene® 1217 has proven to improve performance, cost efficiency, and ease of processability in hot melt adhesive applications. The new copolymer can be used as a substitute for SIS copolymers in adhesive formulations, and can be applied in a variety of uses -- such as tapes, labels, bandages, disposables, packaging, and many others due to its unique benefits.

  • Up to 50% higher thermal stability than typical SSBR copolymers
  • Excellent compatibility with a wide range of tackifier resins
  • Increases productivity by reducing viscosity in SIS substitution, allowing to work in extreme process conditions
  • Reduces formula cost in hot melt adhesive formulations

Solprene® 1217 is also approved for use in food grade applications. Additionally, S-1217 is an excellent polymer modifier due to its elongation and thermoplastic characteristics, and can be used as an asphalt modifier for paving and roofing applications due to its dispersion capability and viscosity level.
