According to a new technical market research report, ADHESIVES AND SEALANTS/JOINING AND FASTENING (CHM048B) from BCC Research, the global market for adhesives and sealants is worth an estimated $41 billion in 2010, but is expected to increase to $52 billion in 2015, for a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5%.
The largest segment of the market, made up of water-borne adhesives, is expected to reach $18.8 billion in 2015, after increasing at a CAGR of 5.6% from the estimated 2010 value of $14.3 billion.
The second-largest segment, made up of hardening sealants, is projected to increase from an estimated $8.8 billion in 2010 to $10.7 billion in 2015, for a CAGR of 4.1%.
The third-largest segment, made up of solvent-borne adhesives, is projected to increase from an estimated $6.9 billion in 2010 to $8.5 billion in 2015, for a CAGR of 4.4%.
The segment made up of 100% solid adhesives will increase at a CAGR of 4.6% from its estimated value of $5.3 billion in 2010 to $6.7 billion in 2015.
The adhesives and sealants industry includes two chemically similar but functionally different groups of formulated products, adhesive and sealants. Adhesive products are used to create a bond between two different or similar materials. Sealants are used to create an impenetrable barrier to gas or moisture. Adhesives and sealants are made from precise blends of petroleum-derived plastic resins, synthetic rubber elastomers, and agents or additives used to enhance certain characteristics. The adhesives and sealants industry consists primarily of manufacturers of industrial and household adhesives, glues, caulking compounds, sealants, and linoleum, tile, and rubber cements from vegetable, animal, or synthetic plastics materials, purchased or produced in the same establishment.
The report takes a broad look at the increasing utilization of adhesives in place of various types of fasteners and different methods of joining in ever increasing number of applications and the impact of such newer methods on the economy as a whole. The environmental impact of utilization of various types of adhesives and sealants is also studied.
