Momentive Performance Materials Receives Recognition for StatSil Elastomers

Momentive Performance Materials has received the 2010 Ringier Technology Innovation Award for its platform of advanced, high performance StatSil silver-based antimicrobial silicone elastomers.

StatSil high consistency rubber (HCR) and liquid silicone rubber (LSR) custom compound products are excellent candidates to consider for use in a variety of healthcare and consumer goods applications that benefit from built-in antimicrobial protection. The new technology is based on direct incorporation of a silver-based antimicrobial additive into the base silicone elastomer.

The technology innovation award program is sponsored annually by Ringier Trade Media, which publishes the leading plastics industry trade magazine in China, and judged by an independent panel of experts. The awards were established to recognize new technologies that have contributed significantly to the success of China’s plastics industry.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious award for our StatSil platform,” said Dr. Burkhard Ledig, Marketing Manager for Healthcare in Europe at Momentive. “We developed this technology to help combat a key concern in the healthcare industry – the growth of microbes on medical devices when used in medical institutions. It is very exciting to deliver technologies like the StatSil platform, which can open up possibilities and opportunities for our customers by addressing some of their most pressing challenges.”

Late last year, Frost & Sullivan awarded Momentive its coveted Product Innovation of the Year Award for the StatSil platform, highlighting design flexibility as one of StatSil’s chief advantages. Based on specific applications, such as catheters and intravenous components, StatSil elastomers can be custom formulated to meet specific performance and processing requirements.

For its Silopren LSR 7000 series of highly transparent liquid silicone rubber, Momentive was chosen as a 2009 Finalist, receiving Honorable Mention, in Material ConneXion®'s recognition of Innovative Materials of the Year. Offered in a range of durometers, the Silopren LSR 7000 series is distinguished for its outstanding clarity, efficient and economical manufacturing process and ability to achieve highly complex optical components that typically surpass those made with traditional thermoplastic materials or glass.
