AK Steel Buy Into Galvanising Operation

AK Steel and International Steel Group (ISG) have formed a partnership. Under the agreement AK Steel have acquired 60% of a flat-rolled steel electrogalvanising plant in Ohio.

The facility which will be operated by ISG was formerly known as L-S Electro-Galvanizing Company. The facility will operate as AK-ISG Steel Coating Company under the new management.

The acquisition will provide AK Steel with an additional 300,000 tons of coated steel capacity per year. Currently coated products constitute about half of AK Steel’s exports, which go primarily to automotive and appliance markets.

The partnership makes AK steel the largest supplier of electrogalvanised flat rolled steel in the US as well as providing financial stability to the new operation.
