Alcoa announced that it received the inaugural “Multinational Company with Contribution to Public Welfare in China” award for its corporate social responsibility achievements and commitment to China’s public welfare.
The recognition was given during the 4th International CEO Roundtable of Chinese and Foreign Multinational Corporations, an international conference of government officials, think tank and corporate leaders, held recently in Beijing. Alcoa was recognized as the top ranked of 16 multinational companies for its contributions to China’s society and community.
The conference is sponsored by the China International Council for the Promotion of Multinational Corporations and supported by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Its aim is to further facilitate business development in China. The theme of this year’s conference was promoting multinational investment, strengthening corporate social responsibility and facilitating sustainable development.
Alcoa Asia Pacific President Jinya Chen in accepting the award on behalf of Alcoa said, “We are proud that our efforts to be a more sustainable company have been recognized by the organization dedicated to growth and development of multinationals in China. Sharing our best practices in corporate social responsibility, including energy conservation, emissions reduction, employee engagement and more reflects our commitment to advance China’s economic development. Alcoa is in China to grow with the Chinese market. In addition, I want to thank the employees of Alcoa China for helping spawn cooperative community relationships by contributing their time as employee volunteers.”
Alcoa China strongly promotes corporate social responsibility exemplified by the initiation of such programs as “Make a Green Life for Our Generation”, launched with Global Village of Beijing, a local NGO. The program introduces elementary students to aluminum’s environmentally friendly characteristics and applications in daily life, helping to raise awareness of energy and resource conservation among students and their families. In addition, Alcoa China employee volunteers have participated in a variety of community educational, environmental and other community service activities, such as assisting with the 10th Beijing Central Business District International Business Festival and serving as study coaches in primary schools.
