Borax to Build New Boric Acid Plant

Rio Tinto has just announced its intention to invest US$2.6 million in the construction of a new boric acid plant. The operation will compliment existing operations in Campo Quijano in Argentina and be built adjacent to them.

Construction on the new plant is scheduled to begin this month, with production of boric acid to begin in 2003.

The new plant is being constructed so that Borax can meet increasing market demands. Growth in textile, fibreglass and borosilicate markets as well the successful conversion of customers from raw mineral feed is responsible for the increased consumption of boric acid.
