Ontario is helping ArcelorMittal Dofasco reduce energy use and emissions during the steelmaking process and help maximize its production, supporting good jobs in Hamilton.
The province is investing as much as $43.6 million at ArcelorMittal Dofasco in Hamilton which would help solidify the company as Canada's only producer of Galvalume, a coated steel product with double the durability and corrosion resistance of galvanized steel. The state-of-the-art finishing lines would ensure a steady supply for its customers including the construction and automotive industries.
This investment would also increase work for supply, fabrication construction and engineering trades in the Hamilton area, as well as support research and design businesses.
This announcement supports the province's five-year Open Ontario plan to create new job opportunities and help promote economic growth.
"Our government's support to ArcelorMittal Dofasco, part of the world's largest steel company, signals that Ontario is a highly competitive jurisdiction for new steel investment that is critical to the automotive and other advanced manufacturing industries. We congratulate ArcelorMittal Dofasco who are innovating and accelerating growth by investing in projects that promote sustainability and a reduced environmental footprint,” said Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development and Trade.
"This significant investment in Hamilton means that high-value jobs are here to stay in our community. ArcelorMittal's choice to invest in Hamilton speaks volumes about our skilled workforce and competitive business environment," said Sophia Aggelonitis, MPP Hamilton Mountain.
"Our industry's future will be defined by technologies that enable significant advances in steel production in balance with environmental protection. Our capital investments in Hamilton are focused on extremely innovative projects with sustainability and efficiency gains.
