Coca-Cola Offers Beverages in 100% Recyclable Plant-Based Bottles

Coca-Cola has introduced its Odwalla and DASANI brand beverages in new PlantBottle packaging, a fully recyclable plastic bottle made from plant materials.

DASANI PET bottles are produced from 30% of plant-based materials, while a combination of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic and 100% plant-based materials was utilized for single-serve Odwalla bottles.

PlantBottle Packaging

A unique method is used to convert sugarcane into an important material for HDPE and PET plastic utilized for PlantBottle packaging. At present, sugarcane ethanol imported from Brazil is used as a raw material. This sugarcane ethanol produces ethylene, which is used to make HDPE plastic for PlantBottle packaging.

PlantBottle plastic bottles are 100% recyclable and can be produced using current systems. Thus, PlantBottle containers can be utilized, recycled and reutilized repeatedly. In terms of aesthetic appeal, proportion, weight and operating life, PlantBottle packaging exhibits the same qualities of conventional PET plastic packaging.

Coca-Cola continues to advance the technology so that other plant materials could be utilized for PlantBottle plastic production. Heinz has licensed the PlantBottle packaging production technology from Coca-Cola to commence the production of sustainable packaging for its ketchup products.

Coca-Cola introduced the PlantBottle packaging in the western U.S and eight international markets in 2009 end.
