Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has secured a contract from the Qatar Steel Company to deliver process technology for a new steel plant located in Mesaieed, Qatar.
As per the contract, Siemens VAI Metals will provide a dedusting plant, a continuous billet caster and melting furnaces to Qatar Steel.
Qatar Steel originally ordered the plant equipment in 2010 summer in order to replace the aged equipment in the steel plant, which is under operation. However, the company had changed its plans to meet the increasing demand for steel in the Gulf market. The latest equipment will now be deployed in a newly built steel plant, which has an annual production capacity of 1.1 million tons of billets. The steel plant is slated to become operational in the Q1 of 2013.
The Mesaieed steel plant will be equipped with a six-strand continuous billet caster, a 110-ton ladle furnace, a 110-ton electric-arc furnace and supplementary plant systems to cut down emissions. The melting furnaces in the new plant have a capacity of just 95 tons. The plant will consume less electrodes, utilities and electrical energy.
Siemens VAI Metals in partnership with Siemens W.L.L. Qatar is supplying the equipment to Qatar Steel.
