Greg Wilkinson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Plastics Industry Association, gave a detailed explanation on how to maintain plastic composite decking.
Plastic composite decks can be easily maintained and are more durable than wooden decks. They can be used in outdoor areas and requires minimum cleaning.
Dust and rubbish found on plastic composite decks can be easily cleaned by spraying water and brushing the area with a warm soapy solution.
Tannin caused by debris can also be cleaned easily. Initially, the debris has to be removed by spraying water or brushing the affected area. After drying the surface deck, a deck brightener has to be applied as per the guidelines of the manufacturer.
Ice can be removed from the plastic deck by using a plastic shovel and snow can be melted using calcium chloride or rock salt.
Food spills on the deck surface should be cleaned at the earliest. To remove the stain caused by oil, grease or food, water has to be sprayed off using a hose. Using a brush with stiff bristles, the area can be cleaned with warm soapy water.
Mold and Mildew will develop either on the dirt or between the planks of the deck. They can be removed by spraying off with water, followed by brushing with soapy water.
