Calgon Carbon, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, announcd that it has secured a $1.35 million funding from Ohio Third Frontier’s Energy Program to develop and market advanced activated carbons for the energy storage industry. The major goal of the project is to develop a local source of activated carbon for various ultracapacitor storage uses.
Calgon Carbon will produce activated carbon at its plant in Columbus, Ohio which will prevent supply disruptions and eliminate dependence on foreign producers. The company’s long-term objective is to produce high-quality activated carbons mainly for ultracapacitor storage. These activated carbons will be superior to current products in terms of economical and technical attributes.
For the activated carbon project, the company will partner with a number of Ohio-based organizations, including Novolyte Technologies, Case Western Reserve University, JME and Maxwell Technologies.
The Ohio Third Frontier grant has provided an opportunity for Calgon Carbon to continue and speed up its growth initiatives in the developing ultracapacitor market and the partnership with major experts in the energy storage industry will enable the company to achieve its commercial and technical goals.
