Golden Star Resources Acquires Wassa Gold Mine

Golden Star Resources have just completed their acquisition of a 90% beneficial interest in the Wassa gold mine in Ghana.

Golden Star have already sent their people over to Ghana to test existing and untested zones for potential development and redevlopment. They will also undertake a feasibility study into the possibility of redevelopment of the heap leach mine.

Initial testing indicates that the ore found in the Wassa mine is better suited to processing via the conventional carbon-in-leach process, as opposed to the heap leach technology used by Wassa. It is believed that this inappropriate technology was in part responsible for the problems experienced at the Wassa mine.

Golden Star hope to be able to make a decision in early 2003 as to their exact intentions for the Wassa mine. They hope to be able to start production at the mine and produce about 120,000 ounces of gold per year as early as the end of 2003.
