Metso, a global supplier of sustainable services and technology for automation, pulp and paper, recycling, power generation, construction and mining industries, will deliver a 140-MW bio-gasification plant to Vaskiluodon Voima Oy in Vaasa, Finland.
The total investment on the bio-gasification plant is approximately 40 million euros, and more than half of the investment pertains to Metso’s delivery. The new bio-gasification plant is expected to be commissioned in December 2012.
The bio-gasification plant, which will be built as part of the current coal-fired power facility, will be supplied with wood-based biomasses, especially forest residue. The generated gas will be burnt together with coal in the coal-fired boiler. The biomass will then be dried in the drying plant to the appropriate level for gasification. This new solution can replace 25% to 40% of the coal with renewable energy and thus will decrease CO2 emissions by approximately 230,000 tons per annum.
Metso will provide a full-scope solution to Vaskiluodon Voima that includes pre-handling, biomass reception, moving fluidized bed gasifier, alteration for the current coal boiler plant, KUVO dryer, and automation and electrification for the whole delivery. The automation delivery from Metso includes the IT systems and automation for the fuel handling and the gasifier combined with Metso DNA system, and modification to the current coal boiler.
The current coal boiler at Vaskiluodon Voima Oy was also delivered by Metso. The former company is jointly owned by Pohjolan Voima Oy and EPV Energia Oy.
