Alcoa has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with titanium manufacturer VSMPO-AVISMA to collaborate in the development and manufacture of advanced light alloy die extrusions and forgings for applications in the commercial transport industry.
The MoU does not indicate the formation of a partnership, joint venture or any other official business deals between Alcoa and VSMPO-AVISMA. Both companies will establish operational teams to organize the implementation of projects ensuing from this MoU.
One of the outcomes of the MoU would be the production of advanced aluminum alloy-based extrusions, with length up to 26 m and width up to 0.7 m, for freight and passenger car applications, including the future-generation super-speed, lightweight rail car for the Russian market. Due to their ability to be recycled for infinite times and lightweight factor, these aluminum alloy components will decrease carbon emissions and enhance the energy efficacy of rail cars.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Alcoa, Klaus Kleinfeld commented that VSMPO-AVISMA and Alcoa are pioneers in the development of innovative technologies, and through this collaboration, they can develop advanced and high-quality products.
Head of ‘Rustechnology’ and the Chairman of VSMPO-AVISMA, Sergei Chemezov stated that the requirements for light-alloy high-tech products for applications in commercial transport are high in Russia and across the globe as they offer considerable savings and fulfill the latest environmental standards.
