CertainTeed, a developer of innovative and sustainable exterior and interior building products, has converted its Ottawa, Ontario-based fiberglass insulation manufacturing plant to produce Sustainable Insulation.
The alteration has enabled the company to offer sustainable insulation products to Canada’s building industry. The company has invested in an enhanced binder batching system for efficient handling of plant-based binder in a low-impact production process. This process has helped the facility to minimize its power consumption by 15%.
The manufacturing process at the company’s fiberglass facility uses naturally available organic and recycled materials. Sustainable Insulation has 71% of recycled glass content, sand and a plant-based binder. It does not contain any fire retardant, dye, harsh acrylics, formaldehyde and phenol. A third party, GreenCircle Certified, has verified the product’s recycled content.
CertainTeed’s Sustainable Insulation offers several benefits to installers, including cutability, enhanced odor, reduced dust, less itch and resistance to water. The material can be easily installed and it has received GREENGUARD Children & Schools certification for excellent indoor air quality. The product exhibits exceptional thermal and acoustical properties. Compression packaging is employed to provide sustainable and aesthetic appeal to the Sustainable Insulation product.
