L.B.Foster has provided 37,000 sq ft of galvanised steel grid deck and 17,000 sq ft of walkway deck for the replacement of roadway on the 1,182 ft Boston Bridge, located in Western Pennsylvania.
The company delivered the decks from its plant in Bedford, which manufactures fabricated bridge products. The fabricated steel decks were particularly designed for the replacement of walkways and roadways on bridge sections, which require a high strength to weight ratio.
L.B.Foster has collaborated with Young Galvanising, which is based in Pennsylvania to coat the decks and deliver them in a particular sequence in order to facilitate efficient installation. The units were also shipped in such a way that they could be readily installed, hence reducing the need to close the busy bridge. The Boston Bridge Roadway Replacement project is likely to be completed by the end of 2011.
Mike Little from Trumbull , who is the overall contractor for the project commended the project management team of L.B.Foster for efficiently coordinating and maintaining the delivery process to ensure timely delivery of the steel deck units. The deck units use reinforced concrete to create a composite material, which weighs less, durable and is cost-effective. L.B.Foster provides fabricated bridge products to various industries including construction, rail, utility and energy.
