Hydro has announced that the Hydro Green Metal Award will be awarded for the improvement of climate footprint of aluminium production. The award is valued at $35,000 for which students, researchers and others can compete.
Aluminium has various advantages such as being lightweight and has the potential of being used in energy efficient buildings and transportation. The material is also recyclable. Around 75% of aluminium produced ever since the inception of the industry is still being used.
The company has launched this award in collaboration with a Norwegian organisation called Technoport which is involved in creating discussions between policymakers and science and business organisations. Individuals and organisations who succeed in providing a solution for a more energy efficient aluminium production method and identifying new applications for the material will be given this award.
The competitors will be judged by Prof. Mark E. Schlesinger from Missouri University of Science and Technology, Prof. Arne Bredesen from NTNU, Norway, Prof. Jim Meston from University of Auckland and this team will be led by the President and CEO of Hydro Svein Richard Brandtzaeg.
While nominations can be sent to Hydro, the winner will be announced on April 17 at the Technoport Awards 2012. Additionally the winner will also receive a work of art along with the cash prize.
