At the 2012 Aveda Environmental Award competition, FutureMark Paper customers, Dirt Rag and GRIT have been felicitated for their environmental efforts and accomplishments in the magazine business through the utilization of eco-conscious paper and production operations.
Dirt Rag was the winner of the 2012 Aveda Environmental Award and GRIT received the finalist honor. Both magazines use Future Connection, FutureMark’s coated mechanical paper comprising recycled fiber of over 90%.
Paper choices is a major parameter for the Aveda Environmental Award, as paper-making offsets all other aspects combined in evaluating the environmental footprint of manufacturing and distributing of magazines. According to a report published by the American Forest & Paper Association, paper production is responsible for over 66% of all types of greenhouse gas emissions in the life cycle of a typical magazine.
FutureMark Paper’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Steve Silver congratulated Dirt Rag and GRIT magazines for being honored in the 2012 Aveda Environmental Award competition. The company is proud to work with eco-responsible publishers with its high-recycled paper that offers better environmental advantages with costs and quality comparable to traditional, non-recycled paper, Silver added.
Green America is the partner of Aveda in hosting the annual event. According to Frank Locantore, Green America’s Better Paper Project Director, magazine publishers can drastically improve environmental sustainability through the use of greener paper. Green America and other environmental groups believe that optimizing recycled content in paper is the best sustainable choice for publishers, as it requires very less chemicals, water, trees and energy to produce new paper from old ones when compared to producing new paper from trees, Locantore concluded.
