At Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) West Exposition 2012, Momentive Performance Materials has featured its innovative UV cure technology for silicone-based medical polymers.
The company has delivered a session titled, “Advances in Medical Polymers for Medical Devices” at the event. In the session, Momentive along with Specialty Silicone Fabricators (SSF) has presented a case study describing the potential to utilize ultraviolet light to cure silicone elastomers that contains various thermally-sensitive materials.
Addisil UV 60 EX is a new elastomer that cures when exposed to UV light and is ideal for medical uses that require distinctive silicone physical properties and lower temperatures throughout the production process. Momentive’s low temperature cure technology has been demonstrated using Nordson’s equipment. The UV curing process provides a wide range of benefits, including fast curing time at room temperature and production of high-quality products.
Momentive has also developed StatSil antimicrobial elastomer using a novel technology that offers integrated antimicrobial protection in silicone elastomers. The material has been developed as a response to the medical industry’s major distress over bacterial contamination on medical device surfaces. Global Marketing Director of Momentive Performance Materials, Lynn Colucci-Mizenko, stated that the silicone rubber’s excellent strength, clarity, purity and other exceptional characteristics will continue to drive the increasing application of elastomers in medical devices.
