Amit Goyal, a materials scientist from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been honored with the title, 2012 Fellow of the Materials Research Society for his research accomplishments as well as exceptional contributions to the improvement of materials research worldwide.
Goyal is a Battelle Distinguished Inventor and his research work has significantly impacted the high-temperature superconductivity field. He is currently the Chair of the UT-Battelle-ORNL Corporate Fellows Council.
Goyal joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1991 after completing his degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Rochester. He also holds a master’s degree in the mechanical and aerospace engineering field from the University of Rochester and received a bachelor’s degree from IIT Kharagpur. Goyal has also taken executive business training from MIT Sloan School of Management and the Krannert School of Management, Purdue University.
Goyal has received international and national awards such as the DOE's 2011, seven R&D100 Awards, inaugural E.O. Lawrence Award, three Federal Laboratory Consortium's National Awards, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Kharagpur, the Distinguished Scholar Medal from the University of Rochester, MIT's Technology Review Magazine's TR-100 Innovator Award, the Pride of India Gold Award, the Global Indus Technovator Award, the NASA Techbrief's Nano50 Innovator Award, the Lockheed-Martin NOVA Award, ORNL Inventor of Year (twice) and DOE's Energy-100 Award.
The title of MRS Fellow recognizes the MRS members who have been identified for their significant research accomplishments and exceptional contributions to the worldwide improvement of materials research. Goyal will be recognized officially at the 2012 MRS Spring Meeting that will be held in San Francisco.
