Harsco¸ a diversified global industrial company offering important services, products and resource recovery solutions, has signed a $55 million worth service agreement with Alfa Acciai Group, an Italian producer of electric arc furnace (EAF) steel.
Under the terms of the agreement, Harsco will deliver services to Alfa's steel mill located in Brescia, Italy for over a six- year period.
Harsco will build and control a new scrap yard for the Brescia steel mill and it will also offer services to process EAF slag produced by the mill. Alfa Acciai will invest and works together with Harsco to establish new operations to improve productivity and environmental sustainability. The operations will substitute older equipment with new ones, which help to take a full control of scrap yard management and slag transport processes. The facilities will include an advanced weighing system, new GPS detection systems and new slag handling carriers. The new operations are under development and they are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2012.
Alfa Acciai’s mill produces a variety of reinforced steel bars and it has also made process enhancements to add special mechanical properties to its products. The properties include high ductility, which is an essential feature for steel utilized in seismic areas.
