Corning has introduced a super-slim flexible glass that could redefine the face of future consumer electronic technologies. The announcement was made by the company at the SID’s Display Week, a popular industry exhibition in Boston.
The latest offering, Corning Willow Glass will promote thin and cost-efficient applications that also comprise slim displays and smart surfaces. The glass’ unparalleled flexibility and strength are such that displays can be wrapped around a structure.
High temperature processing ability is critical for current generation of displays, and polymer films cannot support such processing condition. On the other hand, the Corning Willow Glass can be processed at 500°C temperatures. Through this product, the industry can now perform continuous, high-temperature roll-to-roll processes that have not been possible so far. The super-slim flexible glass can support thin color filters and backplanes for LCD and OLED in mobile devices like tablets, notebook computers and smartphones. It will aid in producing conformable displays for mounting or viewing on non-flat surfaces. Corning Willow Glass can be used for OLED displays, touch sensors and oxygen and moisture-sensitive technologies.
The company has used its proprietary fusion process to develop the Corning Willow Glass. Despite its thinness, the innovative glass offers hermetic sealing to sensitive parts and provides exceptional thermal, optical and surface properties.
Samples of Willow Glass is being delivered to clients specializing in touch and display applications. Corning has partnered with equipment makers and research institutions to make compatible process equipment. The company is also working on other possible uses for its Willow Glass, including applications in flexible solar cells and lighting.
