MeadWestvaco (MWV), a provider of packaging solutions to healthcare, beauty and personal care, food, beverage, home and garden, and tobacco industries, has acquired AARDEX Group, a Swiss-based company.
The latest acquisition expands the leadership position of MWV in adherence packaging. AARDEX Group specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing and distributing medication event monitoring system (MEMS), which measures, analyzes and assists patients' adherence to prescribed drug dosing schedules during clinical trials
The acquisition enables MWV to add the MEMS Cap to its range of adherence-enhancing package products, which comprise Shellpak, Med-Easy, Dosepak Express, Dosepak, Helping Hand and Cerepak solid oral dose packaging solutions. These solutions have a positive impact on patient adherence in clinical drug trials and commercial environment by preventing omission of dosing or double-dosing.
Bruce Thomas, MWV Healthcare’s President, noted that the purchase represents the company’s enduring commitment and scientific approach to reveal the impact of medication packaging as a critical adherence intervention. Through the purchase of AARDEX Group, the company will now be able to offer its customers an entire range of packaging solutions, data analysis and services that address the problems related to medication non-adherence.
AARDEX Group offers electronic medication event monitoring, which is currently recognized extensively as the gold-standard technique for collecting drug dosing histories of patients during clinical trials. The drug package is equipped with a small microcircuit that records the date and time of each opening of the pack. This solution has been used in more than 500 clinical trials that are conducted by major public and private research organizations, universities and several research-based pharmaceutical firms.
