Research and Markets has included a new report titled ‘Dimethyl Terephthalate Market in Asia Pacific’ to its catalogue.
The market for dimethyl terephthalate still remains weak as the material’s worldwide consumption has been declining by nearly 0.5% over the past five years. Strong competition from alternative materials and escaping competitiveness are the reasons behind this trend. PTA is used as a preferred and affordable substitute for dimethyl terephthalate in several applications.
Asia Pacific is the major geographical market for dimethyl terephthalate in terms of production and demand. Dimethyl terephthalate’s major end-use segments are polyester and terephthalate. The demand for these end-use industries is predicted to grow in the Asia-Pacific region. Japan is the major dimethyl terephthalate producer in the Asia Pacific region, representing more than 60% of overall installed dimethyl terephthalate capacity in the region. Second is China with 24%, followed by Korea with 16% of the installed dimethyl terephthalate capacity in the region.
Over 90% of the global consumption of TPA and dimethyl terephthalate is earmarked for intermediate polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer production. PET polymer, also known as PET melt-phase resin or reactor-grade polyester, is used mainly in solid-state (bottle-grade) resins, polyester film and polyester fiber. In addition to melt-phase PET, recycled postindustrial and postconsumer materials are also used for the production of PET engineering resins.
SK Innovation, China Petroleum & Chemical, and Teijin were the key companies in the Asia Pacific region in the year 2011. Jointly these companies represented 100% of the total installed dimethyl terephthalate capacity in the region.
