Electric vehicles maker Tesla, which is all set to unveil its Model S Sedan, has been commended by the Aluminum Association's Aluminum Transportation Group (ATG) for maximizing aluminum usage for enhancement of the vehicle range.
Randall Scheps, Chairman of ATG, stated that the Model S was a paradigm for the application of aluminum in the automotive industry. He also predicted that automotive aluminum application will double in the next 10 years. leading to increased turnover of mass produced, aluminum intensive vehicles that meet consumer requirements of performance, fuel economy, durability and safety. Research demonstrates that use of aluminum in electric vehicles reduces vehicle weight and offsets the effect of a heavy battery thereby facilitating a higher driving range with zero emissions. The improved performance is accompanied by better efficiency and cost savings owing to lesser energy consumption. All of this translates into lower production cost and quicker payback for customers.
The Aluminum Association makes use of the Aluminum Transportation Group to propagate the advantages of employing aluminum in ground transportation. It aims to increase market penetration through outreach programs and research. Its primary function is to serve the member organizations and offer support on aluminum related issues to the commercial vehicles and automotive industries. The ATG members are Novelis, Aluminum Precision Products, Alcoa Inc, Rio Tinto Alcan, Sapa Group, Hydro and Kaiser Aluminum.
